India’s Tata Introduces Low-cost Nanotech Water Filtration Device

Indian conglomerate Tata has introduced two low-cost water filtration devices. Called the Tata Swach, the water filters cost around $20 and will initially be produced at a rate of 1 million units a year with production eventually reaching 3 million units annually. Similar products are currently available but cost twice as much. Low cost filtration solutions are critical for providing clean water to rural populations in developing nations including very large markets in India and China. Nanoparticle filters are nearly as effective as reverse osmosis systems in terms of filtration without requiring an energy source.

Major Movers: Nanometrics

Nanometrics (NASDAQ: NANO) was up over 12% on news that the company received a follow-on order for its Atlas XP metrology system. The order comes from “a leading memory producer” and is to be delivered to multiple factories as customer re-tools to manufacture the latest in DRAM and Flash memory. The Atlas system is used for quality control in the manufacturing of semiconductors, advanced wafer-scale packaging, solar photovoltaics and high-brightness LEDs as well as data storage.

Major Movers: A123 Systems

A123 Systems (NASDAQ:AONE) is up over 14% in midday trading. The move comes on news that A123 along with Detroit Edison will recieve a $5M Department of Energy research grant. The grant is meant to support research examining the potential for Lithium-ion electric car batterys to store emergency energy for the power grid. The grant is part of the government’s $620M R&D stimulus program.

Major Movers: Headwaters and pSivida

The nanotech space continues to see major movement. Today two stocks jumped more than 10%. Headwaters (NYSE: HW) moved 11.65% to the upside while pSivida (NASDAQ: PSDV) gained 14.89%. Nanostockblog reported in depth on pSivida’s latest operating results earlier this week here.
Major Movers: NANO & ACCL

Today had two major movers. To the upside Accelrys (NASDAQ: ACCL) +10.56% and on the downside Nanometrics (NASDAQ: NANO) -14.45%. Accelrys made its largest gain since July while Nanometrics gave up some of its recent run up. Overall Nanometrics is still up almost 50% in the last five days.
Nanometrics on a Tear

Nanometrics (Nasdaq: NANO) shares are up over 15% on earnings news. The company reported earnings of $1.6M or $0.08 per share. A drastic increase over earnings in the same quarter last year when the company recorded a loss of $60.4M or $3.24 a share. The company cited drastic reductions in operating costs in additon to growth in many of their key operations.

Major Movers: Altair (ALTI)

Altair traded down 10.71% today in an overall weak day for technology. The Nasdaq 100 ETF QQQQ traded down more than 2% on investor profit taking and an strengthening dollar.
Major Movers: Elan (ELN)

Elan dropped over 17% in trading on Friday after European pharmaceutical regulators announced plans to look into the safety of Biogen’s Tysabri, a multiple sclerosis treatment. Elan works in partnership with Biogen and provides the delivery mechanism for Tysabri.
